SASHA CELEBRATION WEEKEND - Nottingham

Some of the Sashas have decided to take part in the SCW in Nottingham. Only 11 days to go now until the big day! The theme, as we all know, is Traditional or National Costumes and since there is a strong connection with Austria, and the celebration takes place in May, they have decided to don their Dirndls, Jopperl, Knickerbockers and Lederhosen and put on a Maypole Dancing Exhibition, in the best Austrian tradition!
A group photograph was taken so as to have a permanent record of the Sashamania Maypole Dancers, watched by Yasmin and Aania. 'Why can't we go too', asked Yasmin.

'At least let us be in the picture'.

The boys wanted to show off their traditional gear. Well, why not! They do look rather splendid! Apart from Raffay's sock, which is a disgrace!

A few days later, they had a go dancing around the actual Maypole. A practice run! Nice one, kids! Well done.

WONDERFUL! I just love all their outfits and the Maypole photo is perfection!
Just getting them all standing up on the grass must have been a trial in it's self! So looking forward to seeing this at the SCW but it looks perfect now on that grass another triumph Karin xx

I love the last photo especially as it really looks like young children dancing round the maypole. What wonderful costumes they all have. Looks like you have had a lot of fun putting this together.

You are so kind, Dee! Iona wanted to make a stop-motion movie, but we only just managed to have them standing without falling over for a short time, and as you say, it took us ages! She can do one in the future on the carpet in the living room, ha ha! Looking forward to seeing you soon. xxx

Thanks Lorraine! Yes, lots of people have worked very hard on this! I have always wanted my girls to have a Dirndl dress each, but I think I'll stop at 8, ha ha! xxx

What a wonderful lot of dolls you have! I love their outfits and the lovely Maypole photo.

Brilliant, they're doing a great job for May Day. Well done Iona and Karin for your patience in setting this scene up, I know what fun(!) it is getting them to stand on grass. We've been doing some sewing for the International theme too, more in line with Sasha Morgenthaler's ethnic dolls... wait and see.

What a FANTASTIC scene! Love the costumes and actual Maypole and the history behind Maypole Dancing. I used to teach the children in school how to do some of the dances starting off with the Single and Double Braids before progressing onto the more harder versions like the Barber's Pole and finally the most complicated one of all, the Spider's Web. (Unfortunately, as you can guess, a lot of the time was spent untwisting the ribbons after a small mistake, but that only seemed to add to the fun.)
I noticed that you only have three lads to the five girls taking part which should help as I found that it's the girls that can 'skip' in time and tune better than the boys.

I am so disappointed that I shall miss seeing this superb display at the SCW but wish you every success and hope and pray that your Arthritis keeps itself calm and collected over the whole weekend.
BTW. Was it your husband who made your Sasha kids the Maypole?

Thanks for your useful comments, Kendal! I wonder whether we can actually do some of the braiding at the SCW!!! We may need a lot of patience, placing them and making sure they'll stand and not fall over, ha ha! Iona wanted to make a stop-motion movie with them in the garden, but it was just too difficult to keep posing them. On a hard surface they will hopefully behave better.
It wasn't Wasi who helped with the Maypole - it was a friend who did the construction. I just added the top and the ribbons! In fact, there are so many people I have to thank for putting this together, all those wonderful Dirndls, knitwear, shoes etc. Sasha people are so talented and clever. You will be sorely missed, Kendal. You know that we always look forward to seeing you at the Sasha get-togethers. I am now looking forward to it, but will have to rely on my crutches!!! Never mind! xxx

I am looking forward to seeing everyone's contribution and yours sounds like a really interesting slant on it all. I must not forget to take a lot of pictures!!! Can't wait to meet up again. Are you bringing your lovely daughter along again??? Iona would really love to be there, but it's just too difficult to arrange it all. xxx

Thank you kindly! The Sashas were enjoying having a go at Maypole Dancing in the garden! Although it was rather hard on my knees, I have to say! It took a lot of patience, ha ha! xxx

Wonderful photos! I can almost hear the Blasmusik.
With a little practise, they will do a great performance at the SCW. Wish I could be there and see it.

If we put them on one of the big circular tables they will be at comfortable photography height and easier to move about into their positions. My younger daughter remembers doing maypole dancing at her first school a few years ago, they had a lovely maypole with a decorative top. I wish you were bringing your granddaughter to the SCW, my girl would be pleased to meet her.

Yes, my younger girl will be with me again, she loves the SCW, meeting everyone and admiring all the dolls and their clothes.

That's what I was hoping for!!! And an expert on Maypole dancing at hand is precisely what we need!!! Yes, pity Iona can't come. Whenever I see your daughter at the Sasha events I always think how lucky she is to be able to take part! xxx

Haha Uschi, I couldn't find any Blasmusik to put on the tape!!! So it's 'Komm lieber Mai und mache' on one side and classical on the other! So remiss of me not to get organised about the music. xxx
